Charles’ Story

Charles Hutson brought expertise gained around the globe as a mining engineer, mostly in gold and some gemstones, to the world of high finance in the City of London - advising mining companies on how to maximise their funding.

This mix made him a rare commodity too, until serious head injuries sustained in trying to halt a robbery at a jewellery shop in the local high street, almost ended his life - on 22 March, 2003, at the age of 42.

Battling back from this crisis, through coma followed by eighteen months in hospitals and his rehab unit, Charles returned home in late 2004 with the support of a dedicated team of carers and family. He has two young children, and now spends part of his time in Sussex as well as at his London home.

Though his brain injuries mean he is unable to resume his old career, Charles is determined to find purpose and meaning in his life again.

Many years and many projects in different regions of Africa, all through his career, gave this great continent a special place in his heart and mind.

So The Silver Lining’s inspirational Uganda project feels ‘made’ for him. It harnesses the energy and committment that Charles and others like him can still offer to the world, to deliver the practical help that will enable some of Uganada’s neediest children to find a meaningful future of their own. The Silver Lining delivers meaning and purpose both to the project’s participants, and to those they help. It too is a rare commodity, to treasure, and support.
